arroyo willow ~ 02/04/11 ~ Hatton Canyon

arroyo willow
Salix lasiolepis
Salicaceae

I wish I could identify this willow specifically. Mainly, I wanted to show the cheerful catkins as a sign of spring. I guess that's where the term pussy willow comes from, which to me refers more to the grey, fuzzy buds before the yellow flowers emerge.

ps 02/08/11 - While looking up other plants in the area, I discovered the arroyo willow is the only willow on record for this area. It seems to match my pictures above. I've made the correction to the species name above.

Wonderful harbingers of Spring! The warmth almost oozes out of the photos, Katie. Whilst we can't match your temperatures, our hazel catkins are now open, making full use of the strong winds to disperse their pollen. Thanks for making our Winter seem shorter!

Oh wow! You're getting spring for sure!!! I'm jealous. After our week of frigid freezing weather and then inches of snow, I'm holding my breath as they're predicting more such stuff by next Wednesday! Enough! I want spring too!

No signs here yet in eastern Ontario, but it's nice to know it's on its way...slowly...

I love all the 70-80 degree days we've been having in the past month (I'm sporting quite the sunburn on my face from all the fun in the sun), but I'm starting to get concerned we're not having enough rain to last us through the year. It's been an odd year for weather.
