habitat ~ 05/18/11 ~ California State University, Monterey Bay
This was the day my husband Andy celebrated the completion of his multiple subject teaching program. Two years ago when he was laid off from his job of over 10 years, his dream of becoming a teacher turned into a real possibility. As I post this on 06/16/11, he already has his own 2nd grade summer school class at the elementary school where he volunteered for years and did his last semester of student teaching. I'm incredibly proud of him!
This was also the day I finally got in to see a specialist and missed the appreciation tea part of the celebration. In a big way, this day was a milestone in both our lives. The photo above was taken outside the campus library. I love the contrast of the setting sun on the coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia var. agrifolia) with the dark rain clouds behind.

En plein air

There is something incredibly magical about viewing plein air art outdoors, versus some sterile and snooty all-white galleries. When nature and the open air is your studio, it is fitting to have your work displayed as shown above when participating in the Monterey County Studio Tour. Tom mainly paints local outdoor scenes but also does portraits and places in Italy and France. I asked him if it was okay for me to take pictures of his work to post to my blog. This is not the first time we've seen paintings hooked on trees and tucked away in the shrubbery here in the Highlands. For big celebrations the family pulls out the grandfather's work to adorn their yard. It's wonderful! I feel incredibly blessed to have met this family upon returning to California from Ohio. They have always welcomed me with a big smile and a warm hug. They are good people and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

wet, drippy fog

Sometimes my camera simply does its own thing. Yes, this is a color photograph and has not been altered in any way. I was trying to get a habitat shot of the Monterey pines on Huckleberry Hill here in town. The fog was so thick and heavy up there that it sounded like it was raining.
