"Are these from helium-filled balloons?" he asked in horror.

I'm not sure what the mylar balloons were filled with, but I'm suspecting they're part of some kind of weather experiment. I found them at two different very remote locations in two different counties.

Experiment?! Hmmm, were contact details attached, so that finders could notify the organisers? It's interesting that two close numbers turned up in different counties (assuming that they were released in numerical order). Sorry, but I verge on the ranty regarding balloons and other human-related flying ephemera. In the past, I've removed too much dangerous-to-wildlife litter from nature reserves.

It's a totally wild guess because of the numbered stickers. No contact info, but there could have been on the end of the ribbon? Or maybe they're being used to discourage certain animals from nesting in human structures, which I've seen mentioned online. I wish we'd ban mylar balloons. I heard they can do a number on electrical wires, too. I've been picking up trash along my routes and have been amused by the beverage choices of those who litter.
