Skilton's skink ~ 04/07/13 ~ Garland Ranch

Swoon.  Bright blue is my favorite color. The juveniles and young adults have blue tails, and when they're ready for some lovin' they turn flushy orange. They're remarkably shiny. I've seen western skinks many times before, but this was the first time I could capture a couple on camera.  I was surprised to see one retreating to a hole.  I usually don't think of lizards as being burrowing animals.

Wow! That is an amazing colour. Though I may not share that first pic with Our Lass as she's goes all wobbly-kneed at the sight of brown/blue dragonflies.

Isn't it amazing how certain colors and patterns echo throughout nature? It's often repeated that the detachable bright blue tail acts as a decoy to keep predators away from the main goods. I'm now wondering if the bright blue also acts as a lure for lustful damsels turned yummy morsels. Hmm?

The orange liz peaking out of the hole in the last photo grips me. We have our colors.
